COMMENTARY

Source: Discussion of Cold Damage (c. 220)

Indication: Hot dysenteric disorder due to heat toxin searing the Stomach and Intestines

Symptoms: Abdominal pain, tenesmus, burning sensation of the anus, diarrhea containing more blood than pus, thirst with a strong desire for drink.

Tongue: red, yellow coat; Pulse: wiry, rapid

Almost entirely bitter and cold, this formula treats dysentery as it clears damp-heat and resolves fire-toxins from the Large Intestines. Also astringent, it can quell damp-heat related diarrhea.
